Candelabrum that shines brightly

Chapter twenty-five of the Gospel of Matthew begins with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins.

The former procure oil for their lamps whilst awaiting the Bridegroom, whilst the latter fail to do so, thereby excluding themselves from the wedding feast.

In the Sources, our thoughts turn to the virgin Clare, whose very name bore inscribed her personal calling and mission.

Both in the canonisation process and in the papal bull proclaiming her sainthood, Clare of Assisi is clearly portrayed as a wise and watchful virgin, the very one spoken of in the Gospel.

In the Sources:

“This was the sublime candelabrum of holiness, which shines brightly in the Lord’s tabernacle: drawn by its great splendour, many flocked to it—and still flock to it—to kindle their lamps by that light.

She, indeed, planted in the field of faith and cultivated the vineyard of poverty, from which rich and abundant fruits of salvation are gathered.

She, within the territory of the Church, cultivated the garden of humility, adorned with every kind of poverty, in which every virtue flourishes in abundance” (Bull of Canonisation, Clara Claris praeclara, FF 3295).

And again:

“Moreover, she was assiduous in her vigils and devoted to prayer; it was in this, above all, that she spent the greater part of her day and night” (FF 3300).

And, marvellously, in her Blessing, Clare addresses her present and future sisters:

«Always love God and your own souls and all your sisters, and always be careful to observe what you have promised to the Lord» (FF 2857).

She was truly the virgin never lacking in the oil of Love and watchful Faith.

Through her radiant life, Clare laid bare for everyone the straightforward and generous, prudent and attentive path of the virgin who awaits her Bridegroom with her lamp burning day and night, always ready to welcome the Lord.

«Here comes the Bridegroom! Go out to meet him!»  (Mt 25:6)

It is a happy image with which, however, Jesus teaches a truth that calls us into question […] If we remove God, we remove Christ and the world falls back into emptiness and darkness (Pope Benedict)
We would also like to set an example ourself, even if the smallness of our means might prevent anyone from appreciating the practical and quantitative significance of it. We want to see our own charitable institutions undergo a new development in the struggle against hunger and toward meeting the main needs of the world. This is the way and the only way to build peace (Pope Paul VI)
As St. Ambrose put it: You are not making a gift of what is yours to the poor man, but you are giving him back what is his (Pope Paul VI, Populorum Progressio n.23)
Here is the entire Gospel! Here! The whole Gospel, all of Christianity, is here! But make sure that it is not sentiment, it is not being a “do-gooder”! (Pope Francis)
(Papa Francesco)
Christianity cannot be, cannot be exempt from the cross; the Christian life cannot even suppose itself without the strong and great weight of duty [Pope Paul VI]
The horizon of friendship to which Jesus introduces us is the whole of humanity [Pope Benedict]
L’orizzonte dell’amicizia in cui Gesù ci introduce è l’umanità intera [Papa Benedetto]
The Church invites believers to regard the mystery of death not as the "last word" of human destiny but rather as a passage to eternal life (Pope John Paul II)
The saints: they are our precursors, they are our brothers, they are our friends, they are our examples, they are our lawyers. Let us honour them, let us invoke them and try to imitate them a little (Pope Paul VI)
Man rightly fears falling victim to an oppression that will deprive him of his interior freedom, of the possibility of expressing the truth of which he is convinced, of the faith that he professes, of the ability to obey the voice of conscience that tells him the right path to follow [Dives in Misericordia, n.11]
